Sustainability Manager
Advert Close date: Thursday 16th April 2026
Purpose of Role: Over the last few years The Crown Estate set a new strategy with sustainability at its core, and now has agreed business-wide commitments on energy & climate resilience, nature recovery and inclusive growth. We are now transitioning to deliver on these strategies alongside responsible financial returns as an integrated part of how our business creates value – both for ourselves and for our customers as well as wider communities across the UK.
The Sustainability Manager plays a pivotal role in advancing The Crown Estate’s energy & climate resilience, nature recovery and inclusive growth commitments by leading the delivery of complex, high‑impact sustainability workstreams. The role will work closely with subject matter experts and senior leaders to translate strategic ambition into clear delivery plans. Operating with agility across diverse workstreams, the role requires strong communication and relationship‑building skills, enabling the manager to influence Director‑level stakeholders.
Main accountabilities:
· Lead on the delivery of key sustainability projects and/or propositions linked to progressing against our energy & climate resilience, nature recovery and inclusive growth commitments (both internal projects and in collaboration with third parties)
· Take full accountability for the definition and development of project scopes, and lead on the delivery of these (working closely with subject matter experts and with senior stakeholders across the business)
· Lead the translation of complex strategy into actionable delivery plans.
· Translate long‑term strategy into implementation plans, creating clarity from ambiguity, sequencing delivery in a way that maximises impact, and enabling senior leaders to make informed decisions on prioritisation, trade‑offs and resource deployment.
· Operate as a trusted, senior adviser across the organisation, exercising significant autonomy to drive progress, shape direction, and remove barriers — both internally and with external partners
· Independently gain and maintain buy-in from senior leaders (internal and external), demonstrating the ability to gain support and input from Director-level internal stakeholders.
· Hold accountability for project‑level financial performance, including management of project budgets, supplier performance and contract management — ensuring value for money and alignment with organisational priorities.
· Develop and deliver high‑quality, executive‑ready outputs, synthesising complex data, technical analysis and strategic insight into clear, concise and compelling materials that support decision‑making at Board and steering‑group levels.
Most important skills based requirements:
· Proven experience leading and delivering complex, multi‑stakeholder projects, partnerships, campaigns or propositions from scoping through to delivery.
· Comfortable managing multiple concurrent workstreams and adapting plans based on changing priorities.
· Leadership experience to direct and influence individuals and teams without direct line management control.
· Skilled at diplomacy with the ability to negotiate, influence and build strong relationships internally and externally.
· Ability to translate complex information into clear messages for senior stakeholder audiences.
· Ability to build trust and influence within the organisation.
· Effective budget, programme and consultancy/contract management experience.
· Ability to spot risks to effective delivery and mitigate effectively.
· Generalist level of knowledge of sustainability (decarbonisation & GHG protocol, nature recovery, social & economic impact) with the ability to work effectively with subject matter experts in these areas.
· Understanding of the interplay between sustainability ambitions, commercial decision‑making and value creation.
Curiosity to understand sustainability from a systems perspective and consider cause and effect of current sustainability challenges.
